Krimml Waterfalls: Nature's miracle in the High Tauern National Park
The Krimml Waterfalls, the highest waterfalls in Austria, with a height of 380 meters, are an impressive natural spectacle in the immediate vicinity of the Alpengasthof Filzstein. Embedded in the landscape of the High Tauern National Park, the Krimml Waterfalls are an absolute must see for every nature lover.
Interesting facts about the Krimml Waterfalls
The Krimml Waterfalls consist of three main stages, over which an average volume of water of 5.6 cubic meters per second plunges into the valley: the upper Achen Falls (140 meters), the middle Achen Falls (100 meters) and the lower Achen Falls (140 meters). These waterfalls are fed by the Krimmler Ache, a glacial stream that flows from the Krimmler Achental valley. The water plunges over steep rock faces and through narrow gorges, creating an impressive and noisy spectacle. Especially in summer, when the glacier melts, the masses of water are at their greatest and the waterfalls are particularly spectacular.
The waterfalls are not only a fascinating sight, but also a place of healing, which is why the region is popular for health vacations. The fine water mist created by the falling water masses contains numerous negative ions, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and can strengthen the respiratory tract. A stay at the Krimml Waterfalls can have a particularly beneficial effect on allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
Krimml waterfalls hike
A hike to the Krimml waterfalls is an absolute highlight for hiking enthusiasts. The hike starts in the village of Krimml and leads in several stages along the impressive waterfalls. The well-maintained trail is about 4.15 kilometers long and offers numerous viewpoints that provide spectacular views of the thundering masses of water.
The first section of the trail takes you through the forest to the lower Achenkanzel, where you already have a view of the first fall. The trail continues to the middle Achenkanzel, which offers a panoramic view of the middle fall. The last section leads to the upper Achenkanzel and on to the “Riemann Kanzel” viewing point, from where you can admire the upper fall and the surrounding mountains. Along the way, information boards provide information about the geology, flora and fauna of the region.
The waterfall trail is suitable for all ages and offers numerous places to stop and enjoy nature. The hike is particularly refreshing on hot summer days, as the spray from the waterfalls provides a pleasant way to cool off.
Start your hike early in the day to avoid the biggest crowds. Wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. There is an entrance fee to the waterfall trail and the proceeds support the maintenance and upkeep of the trail.
In winter, you can experience the Krimml Waterfalls at night on a romantic torch-lit hike. Once you arrive at the foot of the waterfalls, an illuminated natural spectacle and a musical greeting await you (registration required at the Krimml tourist office Tel. +43 6564 72390).
